Capital murder charges were filed Wednesday against a 21- year-old woman who allegedly drove her car into a crowd during a dispute sparked by a love triangle, striking and killing a pregnant woman.
Unique Kiana Bishop was jailed without bail pending her arraignment Nov. 26 on two counts of murder -- one of the counts involves the victim's fetus-- and three counts of attempted murder.
The murder charges include the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, which could make her eligible for the death penalty. Prosecutors have not yet decided if they will seek a death sentence.
Bishop is accused of running over and killing 22-year-old Shontae Blanche on Monday afternoon in the 5800 block of South Western Avenue in South Los Angeles. Three other women were injured, one of them critically, according to authorities.
Police responded Monday afternoon to a report of a brawl involving as many as 30 women, who apparently arrived at a Big Lots parking lot to support two women who were feuding over a man, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Matthew Gares.
Blanche was home at the time of the initial argument between the two groups of women, but relatives told reporters that a friend called her to join in.
The brawl spilled onto the street and across Western to a nearby gas station, where Bishop allegedly drove a convertible into a group of women, pinning one of them against another car.
Bishop later surrendered at the LAPD's 77th Street Station.
``It was totally an intentional act to kill the woman. It was the driver's way of settling the dispute. It was a horrific act,'' said LAPD Deputy Chief Charlie Beck.
Beck added that the showdown ``was not a spontaneous dispute. This was a planned fight.''
